Frequently Asked Questions
How does Littlecow pays its users?
Littlecow distributes payments every month. Littlecow, through MovingLake, sells the data gathered from all users to interested parties. This revenue is then split. One part goes to MovingLake, and the other part gets sent to all littlecow users. Users who submit more pages, get proportionally more money sent to them. Littlecow uses the Ethereum blockchain to distribute payments. If you are a littlecow user, we will ask you for your Ethereum address so that we can send the appropriate payment.
What data does Littlecow extracts?
Littlecow extension sends data for only selected sites. By default, it extracts only public information from the site. The code selectors are stored in an open-source project available at https://github.com/MovingLake/littlecow. The chrome extension reads dynamically and in real-time the selectors from the github repository and only sends the html piece within that selector. Please check the parsers folder to learn more.
If the PIIÂ toggle is selected then the whole page is extracted and sent to MovingLake. We believe people's data is already being sold unbeknownst to users. We are offering a way to sell your private navigation data as well. It is still TBD but Littlecow will probably end-up paying more for PII pages than for public-only html pieces.
How is Littlecow a win - win for all parties involved?
Littlecow serves two main purposes: it allows users to earn money from their data and hopes to help websites deal with scraping. Today, popular websites often face unwanted traffic from scraper companies. These companies use large groups of computers and special technology to bypass website security measures, such as proxies, and extract data. Although these scrapers don't pay websites for the data they collect, they do increase the costs for website owners due to the extra server load.
Can I see the end result of my activity?
At the moment we only support paid subscriptions via MovingLake. If you create an account at app.movinglake.com (15 days free trial) and use one of our public data connectors, you can see the result after extraction and processing of the data.
How do companies purchasing this data benefit?
While Littlecow's data is not comprehensive due to the nature of the data collection process, the data is real-time and data is guaranteed to be the real thing at the moment of when the data gets sent by the user. MovingLake's public data connectors are as real-time as it gets for public site's data. Of course, the more users Littlecow has the better the data coverage will get. Finally this data contains aggregate analytics on number of views and number of sessions each page gets.
How is the final calculation of pages contributed done?
Even though you might see a higher number on your 'Stats' within the pop-up of the extension, we count only deduplicated pages as well as pages of interest. For example, pages about your personal account are not counted. Some sites generate repeated contributed pages for the same actual webpage. We count all of these as one.
